The Showcase: Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats

„S.O.B.“ byNathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats. You possibly have heard it before? You sure would immediately recognize this song. When I heard the song for the first time, I thought, it was very old – as obviously many others did too. But it’s neither an old song, nor does the band excist very long.

I was able to attend the 55th The Showcase on this Thursday evening – my 14th the Showcase visit – with Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at Bierhubeli Bern. You know, one of my very favourite events, because you can easily discover new music. You only can win tickets, and someone or somewhat out there really wanted me to be part of it – thanks to Ragusa, Postfinance & 20min I won many tickets. I gave them to others of course. And additionally to this luck, I even was given a meet & greet by a friend.

Nathaniel Rateliff is an American folk singer/songwriter from Denver, who is making music and touring for years already. But only last year in June the album with The Night Sweats was released. The song „S.O.B.“ was immedaitely a hit and, as announced on this evening, also reached gold here in Switzerland. Although Nathaniel Rateliff first didn’t want to record it.

The Meet & Greet took palce before the concert, just next to the stage in the small area in front of the changing room. With such a big band and about 8 Meet & Greet participants it indeed got quite tight in there. Like all the Meet & Greets it took about the usual 15mins. First single photos, then a group pictures, that were taken by a tillate photographer. After everyone who wanted got autographs. Super nice and funny guys, with you could have nice chats. Nathaniel Rateliff told me that « I’ve Been Failing » is his favourite title on the album. trumpeter Wesley mentioned, that with 28 years he was the youngest, the „kid“ of the band. Besides the saxophonist is speaking a little bit Swiss German – his parents are originally from here.

The concert started with „I Need Never Get Old“ [Video] and from the 10 songs, the played in their one hour set, 8 of them were from the new album.

The atmosphere was good from the beginning. But when they played „S.O.B.“ at the end, the audience couldn’t be held back anymore. Even the ones in the very back were all excited. The band left the stage, but the audience simply kept singing on and on and on… „ohohoh ohohoh“… so the band returned and continued with „S.O.B.“ for another round, before they ended the concert for good with „The Shape I’m In“.

It was a really great evening. Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats will be playing St. Gallen Openair this summer. Otherwise you’ll find all their concert dates on their official website. Have a listen, go see them in concert, it’s really fun.
